Sunderland AFC, founded in 1879, play at the Stadium of Light on the banks of the Wear. The club from the north-east of England won six English championships and the FA Cup twice.
The 1973 cup win against Leeds United is regarded as one of the greatest shocks in the competition's history. Sunderland were a second-division side at the time.
The Black Cats' following is among the most loyal in England. The Stadium of Light fills up in difficult times too and carries the team through every season.
