CS Marítimo, founded in 1910, come from Funchal on Madeira and play at the Estádio dos Barreiros overlooking the Atlantic. The club is the oldest professional side on the island.
Marítimo spent most of their history in the Primeira Liga and appeared in European competition on several occasions — remarkable for a club whose away trips always begin with a flight.
The Barreiros is a special place: the ground sits on a slope above the city, with the sea as its backdrop.
